Abstract Purpose Doping remains a significant issue in cycling, leading to potential health, economic or mediatic consequences. The role of sociocognitive variables doping is well identified and the 2 x model achievement goals theory suggests that mastery-approach (MAp) are protective whereas mastery-avoidance (MAv), performance (approach PAp, avoidance PAv) maladaptive. Previous research has shown burnout would be related academic professional contexts (Patel, 2019) more recently sport (Filleul et al., 2022). However, specific roles regarding remain identified. We expected observe an interaction effect between on intention. Methods Our study applied Anderson’s methodology (2008) with realistic scenarios which cyclist was faced decision use substances (e.g., Fruchart 2019). manipulated (x4; Riou 2012) athlete (x2; Isoard-Gautheur 2018; Shirom & Melamed, 2006) yielding eight scenarios. participants were 71 French competitive road cyclists (58 males, Mage = 17.24, SD 3.34) recruited cycling structures. assessed participants’ both explicit implicit attitudes at baseline then measured intention for each scenario, 11-point Likert-scale. Repeated Measures ANOVAs used examine within-subject effects Post hoc tests conducted comparisons conditions. Results found (F(2.485, 173.924) 4.506, p .008, ηp2 .060). Cyclists reported significantly higher (Pholm <.01) with: (a) PAp-burnout rather than MAp-burnout, (b) PAp-no burnout, (c) MAv-burnout MAv-no situation. Conclusions findings suggest may play key understanding intentions. recommend organizations coaches focus promoting climates implementing interventions prevent such as stress management coping strategies.
